OUR VIEW: Protesters deserve attention

A long with the traditional political jockeying, it will be interesting to watch the protests that seem likely to be part of this year’s legislative session.

If you haven’t seen it, you should view the YouTube video shot in the Statehouse after Gov. Terry Branstad delivered his Condition of the State speech on Jan. 10. You can see it at tinyurl.com/7fychgw

Whatever your political stance, you can take satisfaction in seeing how Iowans go about protesting. They allowed the governor plenty of room while chanting a simple message – “put people first” – and avoiding the rude behavior we’ve seen in so many places recently.

The effort was organized by Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund (Iowa CCI Action) and co-sponsored by traditional labor groups plus Occupy Des Moines.

What do the protesters want? The list includes:

• “Too big to fail” financial institutions should be broken up and rebuilt to serve the needs of everyday people, and the CEOs responsible for the financial collapse must be investigated and brought to justice.

• Government should raise marginal tax rates on millionaires and billionaires, crack down on financial speculation and high-frequency trading, and close corporate tax loopholes.

• Banks should be required to write down the debt that has placed 11 million mortgaged properties underwater.

• Medicare should be instituted “for all,” and the cap on wages subject to Social Security tax should be scrapped.

• Government should create funding for public financing of political campaigns, universal voter registration and an end to corporate personhood.

These topics are more suited for federal, not state, officials, but they’re not all that radical.

Legislators should excuse the shouting and seek to understand what’s behind it.
