The Parks Area Foundation has developed architects’ plans for an outdoor concert venue at Riverview Park.

A stage and surrounding area will be able to hold concerts and other events for about 10,000 people, said group spokesman Matt McCoy.

Riverview, in north-central Des Moines at 710 Corning Ave., operated for 65 years as an amusement park before closing in 1978 after Adventureland Park became one of the area’s largest attractions. McCoy used to go to Riverview as a youth.

Ben Page, Des Moines parks and recreation director, said Riverview opened in 1915, modeled after Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York.

The Parks Area Foundation represents the Highland Park, Oak Park and Union Park neighborhoods.

McCoy said a $1 million stage project will anchor improvements that will make
Riverview and next-door McHenry Park big draws. The parks are part of the city of Des Moines’ holdings.

Organizers stress the need for a midsized amphitheater, but they face the challenge of raising money at the same time the Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation is seeking support for an outdoor venue there. A series of summer concerts has raised “tens of thousands of dollars” for the Riverview project, McCoy said.

He said there are plans to run shuttles from the North High School parking lot for events, and a nearby county community center also could help.
