Permits issued for 11 new commercial projects in Des Moines area in January, February

313 wordsAll Latest News, Real Estate and DevelopmentConstruction is underway in the Greater Des Moines area on 11 new commercial projects, including a 33-story high-rise in downtown and the next phase of the terminal project at the Des Moines International Airport, a Business Record review shows.
In January and February, 13 area communities and Polk County issued building permits for new projects whose value was estimated at more than $158.9 million, the review shows.
In addition, permits were issued for 26 tenant improvement or remodel projects, a demolition project and the installation of a solar array to the roof of a building owned by Polk County. The value of the 28 projects totaled $78.4 million.
In January, work began on the downtown tower at 515 Walnut St., with crews digging the foundation for the structure. The $148 million project will include 390 apartment units, a fitness studio and a top floor with open and enclosed areas for residents and their guests. Construction is expected to be completed by in 2027. The permit valued the project at $109 million.
In February, phase 1B west of the airport terminal construction project got underway, according to the city of Des Moines’ permits. The phase includes the addition of airline operations spaces on the apron level and the addition of hold rooms and gates on the concourse level. The permit valued the project at $34.9 million.
Also in February, a permit was issued for footings and a foundation for a new apartment project at 603 E. Sixth St. The Heart of America development will include 186 units. The permit valued the project at $3.1 million.
