If the person in the lane next to you appears to be under the age of 30, you might want to be alert.

A new poll shows that young drivers are more likely to use cell phones while driving, and that 30 percent of them have recently texted while behind the wheel, Reuters reported.

The poll comes from Consumer Reports magazine, which is working with the U.S. Department of Transportation on creating awareness about the dangers of cell phone use while driving.

Among the findings are that 63 percent of respondents under the age of 30 reported using a handheld phone while driving during the past 30 days, the Department of Transportation said. The poll, which had 1,026 respondents, revealed that 30 percent of the drivers texted while driving in the same time period.

Older drivers were less likely to talk on the phone behind the wheel, and only 9 percent of those over 30 reported they had recently texted while driving.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called distracted driving a “deadly epidemic.”
