Principal’s 10 Best maintain employee benefits

Ten growing companies have been selected by an independent panel of judges as The Principal 10 Best Companies for Employee Financial Security – 2010.

Despite a turbulent economy, the 10 organizations were included in the Principal Financial Group Inc.-sponsored program because of their ongoing commitment to employee financial security by maintaining, and even adding to, their employee benefits initiatives.

They include:

  • Washington, D.C.-based American Immigration Lawyers Association, a professional association 
  • Berkeley, Calif.-based Clif Bar & Co., an organic health food and drink manufacturer
  • Huntsville, Ala.-based Davidson Technologies Inc., an aerospace and defense consultant
  • Lincoln, Neb.-based Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Nebraska, a property and casualty insurance provider
  • Columbus, Ohiobased Franklin International, an adhesive manufacturer
  •  Texarkana, Texas-based Red River Credit Union, a federally chartered credit union
  • Peoria, Ill.-based RLI Corp., a specialty insurer covering niche markets
  • Jacksonville, Fla.-based The Bolles School, a private college prep school
  • Maumee, Ohiobased The Delp Co., a wealth, risk management and employee benefits consulting firm
  • Philadelphia-based The Graham Co., an insurance broker and consultant

“We are all aware of how hard growing businesses have been hit by the downturn,” said David Wray, a 10 Best judge and president of The Profit Sharing/401(k) Council of America. “For a whole host of industries to remain committed to offering an excellent benefit package is impressive.”

Top trends among this year winners included adding benefits such as retirement programs, keeping down the cost of health care, expanding educational opportunities and further developing wellness programs.

“If you treat people well, especially in tough times, they’re going to make that extra effort to keep the company moving forward,” said Corey Rosen, a 10 Best judge and executive director of the National Center for Employee Ownership. “Companies that care about their people also perform better. Nice guys really do finish first.”

This is the ninth consecutive year that Principal has sponsored the program.

 “Adversity inspires innovation, and that’s what our panel of judges found with this year’s winners,” said Luke Vandermillen, a vice president at Principal. “They worked with employees to find creative ways to cut expenses without cutting benefits. They focused on adding and improving benefits that really meet the unique needs of their employees.”
