BACKGROUND AND UPDATE: Work is progressing on Waukee’s first brewery, scheduled to open in November on about 6 acres in the northwest part of the suburb, owner Zach Dobeck said.

The foundation is complete and steel framing is being erected, he said. The parking lot is also complete.

“The next major milestone is to complete is the steel framing,” Dobeck said.

When Dobeck announced plans for the brewery last October, the economy was booming and there were no hints that a pandemic was on the horizon. Now the country is in a recession and people are limiting their exposure to the novel coronavirus by staying home and by avoiding crowds when they do venture out.

Dobeck said he had planned a large grand opening for the brewery, but with the pandemic, the opening will likely be low-key. A larger celebration will likely be held in spring 2021, depending on COVID-19-related concerns, he said.
