201 wordsAll Latest News, Government Policy and LawThe public is invited to tour the city of West Des Moines’ Public Services West building during an open house that will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 26 at the facility located at 8850 Grand Ave. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 5 p.m. The new $32.5 million facility includes 155,000 square feet of shop and office space. The new facility will allow West Des Moines to house all of its Public Services operations under one roof. Since 1987, Public Services employees have operated out of a 56,000-square-foot building at 560 S. 16th St. That building was constructed in 1959 as a concrete beam manufacturing facility. West Des Moines paid for the new facility with road use tax funds distributed by the state of Iowa. Planning for the facility began in 1998, and after a series of setbacks and budget issues, land was purchased in 2012 and construction began in the spring of 2019. “We’re now finally able to store all our equipment inside, and that saves us a lot of money that we otherwise would have to spend on maintenance,” Public Services Director Bret Hodne said in a prepared statement.
