Public meetings on Des Moines’ new zoning code begin today

The city of Des Moines is holding several public meetings on its proposed new zoning code, released in May. The city’s current code has been in place since 1965 and has been updated more than 300 times. The earliest effective date of the new code is Oct. 24. The following are meeting dates and times:

  • June 5 – Developer meeting, 1 to 3 p.m. in the second-floor board room at the Richard A. Clark Municipal Service Center, 1551 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.
  • June 5 – Public meeting, 6 to 8 p.m., Des Moines Central Library, 1000 Grand Ave.
  • June 6 – Plan and zoning commission workshop, 4 to 6 p.m. at the service center.
  • June 11 – Steering committee workshop, 1 to 5 p.m. at the service center.
  • June 20 – Plan and zoning commission workshop, 4 to 6 p.m. at the service center.
  • June 25 – Steering committee workshop, 1 to 5 p.m. at the service center.  
  • July 18  – Plan and zoning commission public hearing, 6 p.m. at the service center.
  • Aug. 1 – Plan and zoning commission public hearing and recommendation, 6 p.m. at the service center.
  • Sept. 9  City Council public hearing, 4:30 p.m., City Hall, 400 Robert D. Ray Drive.
