Publisher’s Note: Conetzkey returns as Business Record editor

I’m pleased to announce that Chris Conetzkey joins our staff this week as editor of the Business Record. Conetzkey will oversee the Business Record’s news coverage, along with Jim Pollock, who moves into the role of managing editor.

And yes, if that name sounds familiar to you, you are right. Conetzkey previously worked as a Business Record staff writer following his graduation from Iowa State University’s journalism program, where he was editor in chief of the Iowa State Daily. A Chicago native and self-described sports nut, he was lured away to work for ESPN until we persuaded him to return to Des Moines for this leadership opportunity.

In making this announcement, there are a few, quick items worth noting.

First, Pollock’s transition was at his request. After years in the editor’s job, he yearned to be able to devote less time to meetings and more time to his great love of writing and skill as a wordsmith. The Business Record will benefit from carrying more of Pollock’s writing.

Second, it’s not insignificant to point out that while other publishing operations across the country continue to cut their newsroom staffs, the Business Record is adding to our editorial resources. Our industry has changed dramatically in the past decade, and this addition positions us to continue to expand our role as the leader for local business news – whether in print, in person or online.

And last, this is yet another example of bright young professionals choosing to call Des Moines home. Conetzkey brings with him his fiancée, Kaci Kohlhepp, a Florida native who will be looking to launch her career in Central Iowa after recently graduating with a master’s degree in education with a 4.0 grade-point average.

We’re happy we are able to bring Chris and Kaci to Iowa. And we’re confident that Conetzkey and Pollock, together with our very talented team of writers, will continue to raise the bar in both the quality and ever-expanding volume of products to better serve the local business community.

Join me in welcoming Chris. You can reach him at chrisconetzkey@bpcdm.com or by calling 288-3338, Ext. 245.
