Report: Ankeny rents highest in Iowa; Des Moines, West Des Moines rents have ‘flatlined’

The priciest rents in Iowa can be found in Ankeny, according to a report from apartment rental website RentCafe, but at $1,119 per month in April, apartment dwellers would pay well below the national average of $1,436 a month. Over the last year, rents have increased 1.9% in Ankeny, also below the national average of 3%. Johnston had the second-highest monthly rental rate at at $1,099. The lowest rents in Greater Des Moines last month were in in Urbandale at $824 and Des Moines at $892. RentCafe said rents in Des Moines and West Des Moines have flatlined over the last year, with the study finding an 0.8% year-over-year increase in Des Moines and a 0.2% increase in West Des Moines. Over the last five years, rents have increased 22% ($202) in Ankeny and 19.3% ($144) in Des Moines. Over the same period, rents dropped 2.3% in Urbandale and 1% in Johnston.
