Retiring and departing leaders we knew; who’s new at CEO, too

The Business Record sorted through its archive of key leadership changes in 2017 for a list of some of the significant comings and goings that Greater Des Moines’ business community has seen in the past year. Oh, the places they went! Here are the highlights:
Jan. 30: Doug Ommen has been appointed Iowa insurance commissioner by Gov. Terry Branstad.
Feb. 10: Bruce Rastetter announces he will not seek another term on the Iowa Board of Regents and will allow his term to expire on April 30.
Feb. 23: The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce has named Carole Chambers, currently director of strategic partnerships for the Business Record, as its president and CEO.
March 13: Mike McCoy has been hired as CEO by chiropractic malpractice insurance company NCMIC, effective April 18.
March 27: David Kilpatrick has been named executive director of Des Moines Community Playhouse, effective in May.
April 5: Dan Ryan has been named president of Dowling Catholic High School.
April 11: Daniel Connolly has been named dean of Drake University’s College of Business and Public Administration, effective June 30. He succeeds Terri Vaughan, who will leave that position in June after three years.
April 19: Des Moines City Councilwoman Christine Hensley decided not to run for re-election.
May 3: Homesteaders Life Co. announced the appointment of Stephen Shaffer, chief operating officer, to succeed Stephen Lang as president and CEO, effective in March 2018.
May 12: Chuck Current has been named executive director of the Des Moines Social Club.
May 23: GuideOne Insurance has named Jessica Clark as the company’s new CEO.
May 31: Wells Fargo has reorganized its Community Bank’s Western Region, sending Des Moines-based Lead Region President Don Pearson to Phoenix.
June 6: In restructuring its Business Banking Group, Wells Fargo has announced Tim Billerbeck will lead the division’s nine-state Midwest region from Des Moines.
June 13: The Iowa AgriTech Accelerator has named former Workiva communications worker Megan Vollstedt as its first permanent executive director.
June 14: Jerry Foxhoven, executive director of Drake University’s Legal Clinic, has been appointed director of the Iowa Department of Human Services by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
June 19: Suku Radia, CEO of Bankers Trust, announced that he will be retiring at the end of this year. Don Coffin, president of Bankers Trust, will succeed him as CEO.
July 3: Daniel Oh, president and CEO of Renewable Energy Group, resigned from his position.
Aug. 7: Mary Cownie, director of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, announced that she will depart from that position effective Aug. 17.
Aug. 25: Brent Willett, executive director of the Cultivation Corridor, will leave that position on Sept. 8 to become the president and CEO of the Iowa Health Care Association.
Sept. 27: David Leto has been named president of Palmer Group, effective Oct. 1.
Oct. 1: Mercy Health Network has hired Mary Cownie, former director of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, as chief of staff.
Nov. 2: Joel Nelson has been promoted to CEO and president of LCS, effective Jan. 1.
Nov. 14: Rick Kozin, director of the Polk County Health Department, will retire from that position in December. Helen Eddy, health and wellness director for Hy-Vee Inc., will succeed him.
Nov. 15: Karl Keeler, president of Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa, Idaho, was named president of Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines following a national search.
Dec. 15: Cory Holland has been named president and CEO of the Dana Co., effective Jan. 1. Dana Ramundt, the agency’s founder, will transition to chairman.
