Rural telephone exchange to receive USDA grant for broadband

Bill Menner, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) rural development efforts in Iowa, will be in Truro at 10 a.m. on Aug. 31 to present Southwest Telephone Exchange Inc. with nearly $6 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) loans and grants to expand broadband capabilities in southwest Iowa. Southwest Telephone is receiving a $1,796,199 loan and $4,191,131 grant from USDA Rural Development to assist with the southwest Iowa fiber-to-the-home broadband deployment project, which will provide high-speed Internet service to Imogene, Emerson, Henderson and their surrounding rural areas in Fremont and Mills counties.
