The application window for Paycheck Protection Program forgivable loans will open on Friday for lenders with $1 billion or less in assets, the U.S. Small Business Administration and Treasury Department announced Wednesday. Beginning Friday at 8 a.m. Central time, both first- and second-draw PPP loan applicants may submit applications with those smaller lenders, the agencies said. About 5,000 more lenders, including community banks, credit unions and farm credit institutions, are among the smaller financial institutions that will be able to begin making PPP loans on Friday, the agencies said. Additionally, the SBA plans to have dedicated service hours for these smaller lenders after the portal fully reopens next week. The program will begin accepting applications for first- and second-draw loans from large lenders on Tuesday. The program reopened on Monday initially for community financial institutions to make loans to first-time PPP borrowers. Community financial institutions were allowed to make second-draw loans to previous PPP recipients on Wednesday. According to a listing of U.S. financial institutions compiled from quarterly banking and credit union data by LendingTree, 41 of the 386 financial institutions with branches in Iowa have more than $1 billion in assets.
