Brad Schoenfelder, Midwest region president for Ryan Cos. US Inc., has been named the 2022 Iowa State University Ivy College of Business Real Estate Professional of the Year by the Business Record.

Schoenfelder has been involved with the construction and commercial real estate industry for more than 30 years. He joined Ryan Cos.’ Cedar Rapids office in 1999 as project manager; in 2008, he was promoted to vice president of development. He relocated to Des Moines, where he helped establish an office for Ryan Cos. Schoenfelder became president of the company’s Midwest region in 2017.

Schoenfelder has “played an integral role in many marquee projects that have contributed to the growth and success of the Des Moines metro and which showcase Ryan’s national model of development and construction throughout the region,” Andy Moffitt, vice president of real estate development for Ryan’s Midwest region, wrote in nominating Schoenfelder for the honor.

Among the projects with which Schoenfelder has been involved are:

• The development of Amazon Inc. facilities in central and eastern Iowa and in Omaha, Neb. Ryan was responsible for the development and construction of more than 9 million square feet of Amazon distribution and warehouse space in Iowa and Nebraska. The construction of the fulfillment center in Bondurant was completed the fastest of any Amazon fulfillment center, writes Moffitt.

• Construction of the new federal courthouse in Des Moines. When Schoenfelder was in Cedar Rapids, he developed a relationship with the General Services Administration, which oversees federal construction projects. Ryan has built more than 550,000 square feet in projects for the GSA in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Minneapolis, writes Moffitt.

• Redevelopment of the Market District area in downtown Des Moines through a partnership with JSC Properties. “What started as the construction of a single MercyOne clinic in Ankeny has developed into a long-term partnership,” writes Moffitt. Ryan is working with JSC Properties and the city of Des Moines to install infrastructure in the Market District.

Schoenfelder is also active in the community. He is on the board of directors for the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines and is chair of its 2022 investment committee, and he is on an advisory council for Iowa State University’s Ivy College of Business. He is also a board member of Des Moines Redevelopment Corp. and the Greater Des Moines Development Committee. He was a member of the Business Record’s 2009 Forty Under 40 class.

The 2022 Real Estate Professional of the Year award will be presented at the Business Record’s Commercial Real Estate Forum, which will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. April 20 at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel, 1800 50th St., West Des Moines. To register for the event, click here.
