The proposed development by AHEPA Management Co. would be constructed in an area where surface parking is now located, according to city documents. Specifically, the housing would be located west of Southridge Mall near the southeast corner of the intersection of Southeast Fifth Street and Army Post Road.
City staff are recommending approval of the request. “There is a need for housing in this portion of the city that is designed, situated and operated to meet the specific needs of older individuals,” the staff wrote in information provided to commission members.
Also Thursday, the commission will hear:
• A request to approve a site plan for the construction of a private service airplane hangar with passenger terminal and offices at 6213 S.W. 28th St. The 2.5-acre parcel is located on property within the Des Moines International Airport. The hangar would be owned and operated by Signature Flight Support.
• A request from Fareway Stores Inc. to rezone land at 2723 41st St. to allow development of a 7,759-square-foot Fareway Meat Market, which typically offers a fresh meat counter, sushi, dairy products, wine, craft beer and other products. The property, which includes a single-family house, is just to the west of land at 2716 and 2718 Beaver Ave. that Fareway purchased last July from U.S. Bank National Association.
The commission meets at 6 p.m. Thursday in a virtual meeting. See information on how to attend the meeting virtually.
