Fong’s Pizza gave the media and other community leaders a preview of its new location on Tuesday. Its larger and brighter space is located at 317 E. Court Ave., the former Peace Tree Brewing Co. location.

Restaurant co-owner and executive chef Dennis Epps said customers should expect some of their favorites but also be prepared to try some new dishes, too.

Fong’s closed its original location on Fourth Street on March 9 and plans to open in its new location on April 1. The restaurant announced the move in February.

Epps said the new location nearly doubles the space, which allows for additional seating, a larger kitchen and a walk-up window. Fong’s also plans to expand the outdoor patio, he said.

There was no immediate announcement on the future of the Fourth Street location, where Fong’s opened in January 2009.

The new location features art and other pieces from the Fourth Street location, and also repurposes reclaimed items, most notably the dragon that adorns the dining room wall. The dragon had been hung in the former Spaghetti Works building on Court Avenue.

The interior of the restaurant is framed with original green Chinese roof tiles and a giant stone mural of the Great Wall of China.

In addition to keeping classic dishes, such as the crab rangoon pizza, Thai sticks, dragon wings and pizza egg rolls, the menu will include new entrees such as chili garlic shrimp, Fongolian beef and orange chicken. New appetizers will include moo shu bao, coconut shrimp and pork potstickers.

Epps said there are also new salads, including the chicken almond salad, Yuzu salad and chili garlic shrimp salad. Fong’s has also added two new pizzas to the menu, the moo shu pork pizza and the Polynesian Sunrise pizza.

The owner of Fong’s, hospitality group Full Court Press, signed a lease late last year for the building, which is owned by developer Jake Christensen. Full Court Press also owns Buzzard Billy’s, the Chicken, El Bait Shop, Hessen Haus, High Life Lounge, Iowa Taproom, Ken’s, Lucky Horse Beer & Burgers, the Royal Mile, Truman’s Pizza Tavern and University Library Cafe.

Epps said moving Fong’s was a little bittersweet.

“We had our Fourth Street memories, and Fourth Street in itself is a little neighborhood, but coming over here, seeing the space, getting to build a brand new kitchen, tying in some of the stuff from the old place with some new stuff, it’s been great. The finished result is more than I imagined.”
