A hotel on Des Moines’ south side that closed for renovations has reopened as a Hilton Garden Inn. The hotel at 6800 Fleur Drive was previously a DoubleTree by Hilton. The four-story hotel, owned by Heart of America Group, was built in 1998 and includes just over 100 rooms. Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse is also on the site. The hotel underwent a renovation valued at $3.3 million, according to information filed with the city of Des Moines. The renovation began last fall and includes an upgraded exterior façade and improvements to rooms and other hotel facilities. “This was a reconstruction to a like-new hotel, not a simple remodel,” Mike Whalen, Heart of America Group founder, said in a prepared statement.
