Southwest acquisition’s effect unknown for Des Moines
Southwest Airlines Co. completed a $1 billion purchase of AirTran yesterday. AirTran currently offers service at Des Moines International Airport.
An airport spokesperson said it was too early to tell if service would be maintained or expanded with the acquisition. Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said yesterday in an interview with Bloomberg that AirTran will initially retain practices such as bag fees and seat assignments, which is different from how Southwest operates.
