The federal hiring freeze has put a special census planned in Grimes on hold, according to city officials. The special census would have provided the rapidly growing Grimes an updated population count, which could have resulted in increased funding from federal and state governments. President Donald Trump signed numerous executive orders on Inauguration Day, among them a hiring freeze of federal workers including in the U.S. Census Bureau. To conduct a special census, field census workers are hired to go door-to-door to collect information from residents who don’t complete the census online. It’s not known when the special census will now be held.
