The Iowa secretary of state has launched an initiative to connect survivors of domestic violence with state and local resources available to them. Safe at Home is an address confidentiality program that helps survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking and stalking by providing them with a substitute address, mail forwarding, confidential voter registration and absentee voting. Another program administered by the secretary of state’s office, the “Share Their Story” initiative, features dozens of community and business leaders, family members and survivors who are sharing the stories of those who have experienced domestic violence. “Oftentimes, people who experience domestic violence are not comfortable sharing their stories publicly,” said Melanie Shellenberger, Safe at Home program administrator. “‘Share Their Story’ is a chance for our community to share survivors’ stories to raise awareness and to point people to Safe at Home and other resources.”
