A majority of companies of Iowa interest ended July with gains in their stock prices as U.S. stock indexes ended the month in positive territory in July.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 23 Iowa-based public companies, was up 3.1 percent for the month but was still down 1.5 percent on a year-to-date basis.

By comparison, Nasdaq was up 6.6 percent for the month and the Dow Jones industrial average was up 2.8 percent.

The three largest gainers in stock price in July were Dice Holdings, Green Plains Renewable Energy and Principal Financial Group Inc., with respective increases of 17, 15 and 13.5 percent. Topping the biggest declines in stock prices were Gannett, NewLink Genetics Corp. and Fidelity & Guaranty Life, which were down 5 to 7 percent.

Notably, two biopharmaceutical stocks, KemPharm Inc., and NewLink Genetics, were each down more than 70 percent for the year. Ames-based NewLink Genetics had reported a second-quarter loss of $32.4 million in the wake of bad news from a key drug trial. KemPharm in June reported its abuse-deterrent drug alternative had not received regulatory approval.
