The Surety Hotel, downtown Des Moines’ newest hotel, has been recognized by Travel + Leisure as one of the best new hotels.

The Travel + Leisure 2021 It List includes 73 of the most impressive hotels that opened in the past year. Just 30 U.S. hotels were on the list, including the Surety, which opened in November at 206 Sixth Ave. in downtown Des Moines.

The hotel is located in what originally was known as the Hippee Building, of which construction was completed in 1913.

Chicago-based Aparium Hotel Group bought the building in 2017 and transformed it into a 137-room boutique hotel with restaurant and bar.

The 12-story building’s $40 million renovation included preserving historic features like a main staircase with ornate iron railings and marble and terrazzo floors, vault doors and hardwood maple floors.

Travel + Leisure, owned by Des Moines-based Meredith Corp., began annually publishing its It List 16 years ago.

The hotels on this year’s list are located in 29 countries and represent a variety of styles including safari lodges and luxury beach resorts, according to a news release.

“In a year when hotels were challenged to rethink their approach to just about everything, the industry forged ahead, Jacqui Gifford, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure, said in a prepared statement. “The 2021 It List is a reminder of so many of the joys of travel.”
