A Des Moines social services nonprofit has hired its next executive director. Suzanne Zutter took over the top role at Families Forward on Wednesday, according to a news release. She replaces Tim Shanahan, who retired after 20 years. Zutter has been an executive at animal rescue organizations and at United Way and directed fundraising campaigns that raised over $20 million, the news release said. She has also fostered over 300 dogs as part of her volunteer experience. Combining her background with current staff’s expertise “will enable Families Forward to meet current and future service needs supporting housing, education and food security for families in Des Moines,” board president Phyllis Tinker said in a prepared statement. Families Forward’s primary programs are Bidwell Pantry, Child Development Center, New Directions Shelter and the Home Connection.
