Holmes Murphy & Associates Inc. announced Friday that its former president, CEO and chairman, Jim Swift, has left the company after a distinguished 35-year career with the West Des Moines-based insurance broker.

Swift and Holmes Murphy “mutually agreed to end their working relationship,” the company said in a press release. Swift’s last day with Holmes Murphy was March 16, a spokeswoman said.

In January 2014, Swift had moved into a new role as director of development opportunities as part of a planned leadership succession strategy. Swift, who joined the firm in 1980 as an account executive, was Holmes Murphy’s president before being named CEO in 2007 and chairman and CEO in 2009.

“The unprecedented growth of Holmes Murphy beyond Iowa to a national footprint is due in large part to the leadership of Jim Swift,” said Daniel Keough, chairman and CEO. “He has led our organization through multiple acquisitions throughout his career that have enabled us to not only grow but solidify our heritage of private ownership. He truly exemplifies our core values of expert know-how, unsurpassed service excellence and integrity.”

Swift did not comment in the release and could not be immediately reached for comment.

Swift’s tenure included several notable accomplishments:

  • Holmes Murphy has grown into the 26th-largest independent risk management and insurance brokerage firm in the United States, according to Business Insurance magazine.
  • The firm had record-setting revenue surpassing $100 million in 2012. Revenue is projected at $125 million in 2015, up from $50 million just a decade ago.
  • Shareholder value of the privately held company has increased more than threefold since 2002.
  • The firm has grown from two to 11 offices in nine states and from 70 to more than 550 employees. Swift led the initiative to acquire offices in multiple markets, including Cedar Rapids, Peoria, Madison, Sioux Falls, Omaha, and Scottsdale.

A University of Iowa graduate, Swift advanced to the position of senior vice president of sales by 1988, and was leading the brokerage side of the company as president of Holmes Murphy Brokerage/Iowa by 1993. He served as CEO from 2007 to 2010, chairman from 2010 to 2013, and director of development opportunities since 2014.

He has been actively involved in numerous professional, civic and charitable organizations, including serving as chair of Young Presidents’ Organization, Iowa chapter, and on the board of directors of the Dowling Foundation.
