Mercy Medical Center-West Lake hospital in West Des Moines was open for emergency cases only this morning, as administrators try to sort out the cause of an equipment failure early yesterday that flooded the hospital’s upper floors. “Right now they’re working on the facility to reopen it for admissions; we are still not admitting patients,” said Gregg Lagan, a Mercy spokesman. The hospital’s emergency department is open to handle patients and all services that would support emergency cases, such as X-ray, critical care and obstetrical personnel, remain available for emergencies, he said. Mercy yesterday transferred 22 patients from West Lakes, which opened in September, to its main hospital, and overnight transferred one emergency patient who required admission. Lagan said that air conditioning has been restored to the hospital’s first and second floors. Pipes used in the hospital’s air conditioning system broke yesterday, which officials said caused the flooding. The reason for the failure and extent of the damage have not yet been determined, Lagan said.
