Meredith Corp.’s chief financial officer in waiting will be paid an annualized first-year salary base of $400,000 through June 30, 2009, with an increase to $450,000 in the following fiscal year, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Meredith announced Sept. 26 that it would hire Joseph Ceryanec effective Oct. 20 to fill the vacancy created when former chief financial officer Suku Radia left Meredith to become president of Bankers Trust Co. Ceryanec, who was the central region president for PAETEC Corp., also will receive a $100,000 signing bonus, performance bonuses of up to 50 percent of base salary through the end of Meredith’s current fiscal year and 60 percent after that. In addition Ceryanec will receive 50,000 stock options at their value on Oct. 20, 7,500 shares of common stock and be entitled to participate in the company’s executive stock ownership program, with a targeted ownership goal of 20,000 shares.
Total proceeds from the 2008 Principal Charity Classic will be announced today at 5:30 p.m. at the Jordan Creek Amphitheater, 101 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines. Representatives from Principal Financial Group Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. will announce the total contribution, which will benefit Blank Children’s Hospital, Bravo Greater Des Moines, the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation, United Way of Greater Iowa, Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa, and more than 80 other nonprofit organizations.

Renowned agricultural ecologist Sir Gordon Conway, chief scientific adviser to the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development and president of the Royal Geographical Society, will present the seventh annual Norman Borlaug Lecture at Iowa State University on Oct. 13. The lecture, “The Global Agricultural Crisis of the 21st Century,” will be held at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Great Hall and is free to attend.
Sen. Tom Harkin announced yesterday that Iowans for Social and Economic Development (ISED) Ventures received a $459,227 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support job opportunities for low-income individuals. ISED Ventures will use this money to help people use their talents and skills to start small businesses, obtain a quality job and build financial assets.
Three of Meredith Corp.’s magazines – Family Circle, Parents and Ladies’ Home Journal – have won Eddie Awards, which are presented by Folio magazine and recognize editorial excellence. Family Circle took gold in the parenting, family and youth category, Parents took silver in the same category, and Ladies’ Home Journal took silver in the women’s fashion and lifestyle category.
The Iowa State University College of Engineering will hold a dedication ceremony for phase one of its new electrical and computer engineering building. The ceremony will be held Thursday at 5:30 p.m. near the building’s west entrance. The first phase of the two-phase project cost $16.5 million and provides 23,000 square feet of classrooms, research and teaching laboratories equipped with the latest equipment and technology for students and faculty.
Nurses from Wesley Community Services will be making flu shots available again this year at Des Moines International Airport, beginning Oct. 6 and continuing through mid-December. The shots will be available on the lower level of the terminal in front of the former Business Center. The shots will cost $20 and will be available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 6 to 8 a.m. and from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
