An open house will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at  the new MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex, 6500 Grand Ave. in West Des Moines. The nearly $60 million project, paid for with money from both the public and private sectors, includes nearly 300,000 square feet of space that can accommodate up to 8,000 people. A 20,000-square-foot arena includes 1,500 seats, and one sheet of ice can be converted to a “dry floor” so that events such as conventions, concerts and expos can be held in it. A second rink, which seats 300 people, features year-round ice rental opportunities. A 150,000-square-foot fieldhouse includes basketball courts, three pickleball courts, four batting cages and a full-sized artificial turf field, which can accommodate soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball, softball and other activities. Visitors to the open house can skate on the ice (with skate rental) and run on the indoor turf. The open house is free and no registration is required.
