The Iowa Transportation Commission approved more than $1.9 million for railroad crossing improvements for fiscal 2009, and more than $1.8 million was approved for fiscal 2010 for the same type of projects. The funding will go toward making railroad crossings on highways smoother as part of the 2009-2010 Highway/Railroad Crossing Surface Repair Program, which received funding from the Iowa Road Use Tax Fund and the Federal-Aid Rail-Highway Safety Fund. The Surface Repair Program will be responsible for 60 percent of the costs, and the other 40 percent will be incurred by the railroad and highway jurisdiction, which is generally funded by the city or county.

The budget pinpoints two locations in Polk County for the 2009 improvements: Southeast Second Street, which will cost approximately $37,200, and Southeast Fifth Street, which is estimated at $37,200. The fiscal 2010 budget does not propose any railroad-highway crossing improvements for Polk County.
