U.S. Airways to place major order with Airbus
U.S. Airways Group Inc. is planning to order at least 90 aircraft from Airbus SAS valued at more than $10.7 billion, according to a person familiar with the sale, reported Bloomberg News. The purchase of about 60 single-aisle Airbus A320 planes, eight wide-body A330s and 22 long-range A350 WXB jets will replace planes and add long-range jets to U.S. Airways fleet. The company announced the order at the International Paris Air Show today.
Newer planes would allow the company to save money on maintenance and fuel as well as offer nonstop flights between the United States and China. Deliveries of the A320s would begin about 2010, the A330s in 2009 and the A350s in 2014.
The sale is considered a victory for Airbus, which has trailed Boeing Co. in orders of 300-seat jetliners. U.S. Airways negotiated deals with both companies and the order for the A350 WXBs is a modification to an order for 20 of an earlier version of the A350 the carrier placed in November 2005. The deal came in exchange for a $250 million Airbus loan to help finance the merger of U.S. Airways and America West Holdings Corp.
