Three University of Iowa students are organizing student caregivers after an unreliable and frustrating experience, reports the Daily Iowan. Michael Penniman, Peter Easler and Jacob Newcomb founded the nonprofit Students Care to provide reliable, professional care for students at UI after Penniman, a quadriplegic, called Newman to report his morning caregiver hadn’t shown up one day by 1 p.m. Students Care has hired 15 students at UI to assist two clients, but the nonprofit also encourages volunteers to reduce reliance on Medicaid waiver funds and donations. The group is interested in expanding to Iowa State University in the near future.
