The $16 million second phase of the UNI-Dome renovation plan at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls will go before the Iowa Board of Regents at its meeting in November, according to a news release from the school. Phase one of the project, which cost $11.2 million, has been completed. It was launched two years ago with a capital campaign to renovate the sports facility that is the home of the UNI Panther football team and the state high school football championships. Phase two work will include reseating, restroom upgrades, improved accessibility with wider aisles and handrails and party decks, the release says. “The UNI-Dome has given so much to Panther fans and this state. It’s time for us to give back to this iconic space,” said Megan Franklin, UNI athletics director. “The proposed upgrades to the bowl will provide Panther fans a variety of seating options and styles with increased comfort and high-end amenities.” The facility received a new Teflon-coated fiberglass roof and added the Van G. Miller Family Charitable Foundation Football Team Meeting Room in phase one. The release says UNI has secured $9 million in funding of the phase two project costs. If approved, construction will tentatively start in April, with new seating expected to be ready by the 2025 football season. The second phase is scheduled for completion in fall of 2026, the 50th anniversary of the UNI-Dome’s original opening.
