United Way launches free prescription discount program
Central Iowans with limited prescription benefits or no health insurance can pay less for prescription medications through a free program now offered through United Way of Central Iowa. The FamilyWize card, which is a free prescription savings card program, can save participants an average of 40 percent or more. “No one should be forced to choose between paying for food, rent or medicine because of the high cost of prescriptions,” said Elisabeth Buck, chief community impact officer for United Way of Central Iowa. “That’s why we’ve partnered with FamilyWize to distribute free prescription savings cards to everyone in central Iowa.” Ninety-five percent of U.S. pharmacies participate in the program, and United Way organizations in all 50 states have already enabled 8 million people to save a total of more than $825 million as of February, with a goal of $1 billion in savings by the end of 2015, Buck said. The card can be obtained by calling United Way’s 211 community service number, or may be downloaded and printed online.
