The risk management and insurance major at the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business is only 2 years old but it’s already the fifth-largest in the country, according to Business Insurance magazine. The program had an enrollment of 263 majors and 34 minors in the 2024 fall semester. The University of Georgia, the largest risk management and insurance department in the U.S. for many years, has 412 majors. “Our growth can be attributed to how we talk about risk to this next generation who we are preparing to be future-ready leaders,” Jim Lewis, executive director of Tippie’s Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance, said in a prepared statement. “Students want to make a positive impact on the world, apply skills and use AI technology to solve real-world problems for actual companies.” He said insurance companies also have lots of job openings, with an estimated 50% of the industry retiring in the next five years. As a result, 87% of Tippie’s 2024 RMI graduates had jobs at graduation.
