Urbandale residents in March will vote on whether to authorize the city to pay up to $43 million for the design, construction and outfitting of a community recreation complex that would be located on the southeast corner of Meredith Drive and 152nd Street in the Walnut Creek Regional Park.

The proposed facility, called the U-Plex, has been identified as a priority in Urbandale’s master planning for over 16 years.

This week, the City Council approved ballot language for the March 7 referendum.

In December, the council approved the conceptual design plans and cost projections.

The U-Plex is proposed to include basketball and pickleball courts, an indoor walking track,  rentable space, an outdoor regional playground and sprayground, and an indoor playground. The project’s preliminary design was created with community feedback to meet the growing recreational needs of the community.

“Urbandale is a growing and thriving community, and the U-Plex is a testament to that growth,” Jan Herke, the city’s parks and recreation director, said in a prepared statement. “It will provide a wide range of recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities and contribute to the overall quality of life in our city.”

More information about the proposed project, including when public meetings will be held, can be found here.
