Urbandale voters say no to proposed U-Plex
Urbandale voters on Tuesday rejected a proposal to pay up to $43 million for a community recreation center complex in Walnut Creek Regional Park, at Meredith Drive and 152nd Street, unofficial vote totals show. Tallies from Polk and Dallas county election offices show that 1,425 voters approved the bond referendum to design and build the U-Plex; 7,585 voted against it. To pass, 60% of voters needed to approve the measure. “The decision to bring the U-Plex project to a vote was a deliberate one, made by the City Council because we believed it was crucial to hear from our residents on this matter,” Urbandale Mayor Robert Andeweg said in a statement. “I commend everyone who took the time to cast their ballot and participate in this important decision-making process. … The City is committed to continuing to work towards providing recreational opportunities for its residents and will explore other options moving forward.”
