The Varsity Cinema will show the movie “Field of Dreams” on Friday at 7 p.m., complete with a special preshow introduction that sheds light on the theater’s connection to the film and one of its characters. Veda Ponikvar, the real-life small town Minnesota newspaper publisher whose character appeared in the book and film, was a Drake University student. She organized a rally for Franklin Roosevelt featuring Franklin Roosevelt Jr. at the Varsity in 1940 after Drake officials refused to host the event on campus. Jim Vickery, a longtime Des Moines resident, will share his memories of Ponikvar and her life, as well as his own experiences of going to the theater since its opening in 1938.
