376 wordsAll Latest News, Real Estate and Development, Retail and BusinessVon Maur, the Davenport-based department store chain known for its live piano music, is exploring whether to lease existing unoccupied space at Jordan Creek Town Center rather than build a new facility, the West Des Moines center’s general manager confirmed to the Business Record on Friday.
In February 2018, Von Maur officials announced plans to build a 140,000-square-foot, two-level store on the north side of Jordan Creek Town Center between Scheels and the space formerly occupied by Younkers. The new store, valued at $25 million, was expected to open in fall 2022.
Randy Tennison, senior general manager of Jordan Creek Town Center, said the retailer is exploring whether to lease the space previously occupied by Younkers. He emphasized final decisions have not been made.
“Things change all the time,” Tennison said. “Nothing is ever final until the agreements are signed and construction begins.”
He said regardless of whether Von Maur builds or remodels the former Younkers space, the retailer is expected to open at Jordan Creek in fall 2022.
Von Maur also has a store at Valley West Mall. Officials haven’t yet said whether that store will remain open or close.
Younkers, which leased about 152,000 square feet on two floors of Jordan Creek, closed in August 2018 after its parent company Bon-Ton was sold to a liquidation company after filing for bankruptcy.
Dave & Buster’s, a Texas-based arcade and sports bar chain with 130 stores, had been considering locating in a portion of the former Younkers space, Tennison said. If Von Maur decides to lease the space previously occupied by Younkers, the center would find a different location for Dave & Buster’s, which would need about 25,000 square feet for its restaurant and arcade.
“If we need to move some tenants around, we could do that,” Tennison said.
Telephone calls to both Von Maur and Dave & Buster’s were not returned.
In 2018, Iowa lawmakers made it possible for companies like Dave & Buster’s to operate in the state. Iowa law had limited amusement concession prizes to $100 or less. The bill, signed by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds in April 2018, raised the limit to $950.
West Des Moines city officials said they hadn’t seen site plans from Von Maur or Dave & Buster’s.
