Voters in 5 Polk County cities approve local option sales tax

Voters in five Polk County communities Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a 1-cent local option sales tax that will provide cities with another source of revenue in addition to property taxes.

The sales tax will increase to 7% from 6% on Jan. 1 in Bondurant, Grimes, Johnston and the Polk County portions of Clive and Urbandale. The sales tax is already in place in Altoona, Des Moines, Pleasant Hill, West Des Moines, Windsor Heights and the Dallas County portions of Clive and Urbandale. 

The following is how much estimated revenue each community that voted Tuesday will receive from the 1-cent tax, how the money will be spent, and unofficial vote tallies:

Bondurant
Estimated annual amount will receive: $865,923
Planned use of sales tax money: Sixty percent of the funds will be used to lower property taxes by about $1.95 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The remainder will be used to pay for street improvements and other capital improvements including a library expansion, parks and trails.
Unofficial election results: Yes votes – 363 (79.6%); No votes – 91 (20%)

Clive

Estimated annual amount will receive: $1.7 million
Planned use of sales tax money: Property tax relief and a new public safety building, estimated to cost $15.25 million. Money from the tax will also be used for street and greenbelt improvements and stormwater management. 
Unofficial election results: Yes votes – 730 (77.6%); No votes – 210 (22%)

Grimes

Estimated amount will receive: $1.6 million 
Planned use of sales tax money: Half of the money will be used to reduce property taxes. The remainder of the money would be used to pay for a new library, fire station, and park and trail improvements.
Unofficial election results: Yes votes – 1,111 (81.6%); No votes – 250 (18.3%)

Johnston

Estimated amount will receive: $3.2 million
Planned use of sales tax money: Half of the money will be used to reduce property taxes. Among the other things the remainder of the money will be used for is to hire additional full-time police and firefighters, install security cameras at the library, develop a water trail along Beaver Creek, and improve streets and sidewalks.
Unofficial election results: Yes votes – 1,524 (76.4%); No votes – 470 (23.5%)

Urbandale

Estimated amount will receive: $6 million 
Planned use of sales tax money: At least half of the money will be used to reduce property taxes. The rest will be used to improve streets and parks, pay for public safety facilities, and for stormwater management.
Unofficial election results: Yes votes – 2,037 (65.2%); No votes – 1,087 (34.8%)
