A Waukee landowner wants to redevelop his 10-acre residential property to allow the development of a high-end wedding venue.

The property, located at 3319 Ashworth Road, is zoned agriculture. Property owner Don Gonnerman is requesting the parcel be zoned to Kettlestone Retail Community District, a change that would allow the wedding venue.

The Waukee City Council this week approved the first reading of the ordinance that would allow the zoning change. The unanimous vote came after council members heard some neighbors concerns over noise and increased traffic in the area.

The proposed venue would be operated by Brad & Dad LLC which also owns Decades Event Center at 1208 Grand Ave., West Des Moines. Plans for the Waukee development include construction of a 15,000 square foot building that would include an upper story deck. Also planned are a garden, bridge over a drainage ditch and large area for outdoor seating.

Typically, the venue would only be open on weekends and events would end by 11 p.m., council members were told. In addition, a uniformed police officer is required at all events, the council learned.

Development of the project would take about a year once it gained the necessary city approvals.
