Wellmark gives $150,000 to Iowa Food Bank
The Wellmark Foundation has awarded a two-year, $150,000 grant to the Iowa Food Bank Association to implement a project to assist Iowans in applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps) and other state benefits by bringing the Internet to them.
The program, called SNAP Mobile Access Points, will be implemented at food pantries, emergency meal sites and shelters throughout the state by providing Internet access and help from staff on how to use it to apply for benefits from the programs.
Partners include the Department of Homeland Security, Iowa State University Extension and the Des Moines Area Religious Council.
