Des Moines Public Library business book pick: “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen,” by David Brooks.

Why you should read it: The political and cultural commentator and author’s 2023 book serves as a practical guide to help people better foster deeper connections at home, work and beyond. Brooks argues that one skill lies at the center of any healthy person, family, community or organization: “The ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen – to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.”
