Wiggins, Iowa’s acting chief justice, plans to retire in March

David Wiggins, pictured, the Iowa Supreme Court’s acting chief justice, announced his plans to retire, effective March 13. Wiggins, 69, was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2003. He became acting chief justice in November after the unexpected death of Chief Justice Mark Cady. Wiggins’ current eight-year term is set to expire Dec. 31. Under Iowa law, justices must retire at age 72. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds will appoint Wiggins’ successor from a list of three nominees submitted by the State Judicial Nominating Commission. Last week, the Judicial Nominating Commission forwarded the names of three people to fill Cady’s position: Joel Barrows, a district judge out of Bettendorf; Matt McDermott, a Des Moines attorney; and Dana Oxley, a Cedar Rapids attorney. Reynolds has until Feb. 8 to decide who will fill the current high court vacancy. Wiggins, who lives in West Des Moines, was born in Chicago and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois. He graduated from Drake University’s law school in 1976. He began his career in law at the West Des Moines law firm of Williams, Hart, Lavorato & Kirtley, of which he became a partner in 1979, according to his biography at iowacourts.gov.Trending News
